Composition of shrimp populations (Crustacea: Decapoda) in non-vegetated areas of two river islands in a Brazilian Amazon estuary Rev. Bras. Zool.
Nóbrega,Priscila Sousa Vilela da; Bentes,Bianca; Martinelli-Lemos,Jussara Moretto.
This study investigates the shrimp found in non-vegetated areas of an estuary of the Amazon River. We ascertained the input of juveniles, species' biometrics and the influence of environmental factors on the abundance of species. The samples were collected monthly, from August 2006 to July 2007, in two places in the estuary, each next to an island. For collecting, we used a manual trawl to perform three hauls per month, totaling 36 samples per site. The abundance of shrimps was estimated as a function of the density of specimens per unit area. We used the Spearman's correlation to test the hypothesis that there is significant correlation between the average of the environmental variables measured and variations in shrimp density. The Kruskal-Wallis and the...

Simões,Sabrina M.; Costa,Rogerio C.; Fransozo,Adilson; Castilho,Antonio L..
The objective of the present study was to analyze diel variation in the abundance and size of the seabob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri in the Ubatuba region, state of São Paulo, during the year 2000. In each season of the year, collections were made in the day and at night on 9 transects at depths ranging from 2 to 40 m. The estimated shrimp amount was of 28,878 individuals. Although the catch rate was higher during the day (15,853 shrimp), this did not differ significantly from the catch at night (13,025). The catch rate was higher in daytime on most transects, but was higher at night at locations where fine and very fine sand predominated. The majority of juveniles were caught during the day. The mean size (CL) was 14.43 ± 4.02 mm for day and 14.82 ± 4.28...

Diseases of cultured prawns in Australia ArchiMer
Lester, R; Paynter, J.
Plebejus baculovirus and other MBV-related viruses have been found in Penaeus plebejus, P. monodon and P. merguiensis . They appear highly pathogenic in certain situations currently undefined. We have found Hepatopancreatic Parvo-like Virus (< hpv) in wild P. esculentus and P. merguiensis but not yet in cultured prawns. The amphophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies we find in P. esculentus do not appear to have a viral cause.

Fluorescent amplified fragment length polymorphism (fAFLP) analyses and genetic diversity in Litopenaeus vannamei (Penaeidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Gonçalves,Michelle Mantovani; Lemos,Manoel Victor Franco; Galetti Junior,Pedro Manoel; Freitas,Patrícia Domingues de; Furtado Neto,Manuel Antonio Andrade.
The Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei (Penaeidae), represents about 95% of all Brazilian shrimp production. The Brazilian L. vannamei foundation broodstock was made up of specimens collected from different American Pacific sites, but little information was collected on the genetic structure of the broodstock. We used the fluorescence amplified fragment length polymorphism (fAFLP) method to study the genetic diversity of L. vannamei broodstock lines 03CMF1 and 03CBF1 originally produced by breeder-shrimps imported mainly from Panama and Ecuador, although wild individuals from other localities may also have been used in producing these two lines. Our results showed a total of 93 polymorphic bands ranging from 50 to 500 bp, the mean Nei's genetic...

Growth and survival of pink shrimp (Farfantepenaeus paulensis) postlarve in cages and pen enclosures Scientia Agricola
Vaz,Luciano Jensen; Wasielesky Jr.,Wilson; Cavalli,Ronaldo Olivera; Peixoto,Silvio; Santos,Marcos Henrique Silva; Ballester,Eduardo.
Technology for the culture of the pink shrimp Farfantepenaeus paulensis in low-cost cages and pen enclosures was developed together with artisanal fishermen of the Patos Lagoon estuary, southern Brazil. Although the production of postlarvae (PL) under laboratory conditions is well documented, survival and growth during the nursery phase cages and pen enclosures in the nature has not yet been analyzed. Therefore, the present study compared survival and growth of F. paulensis postlarvae reared either in cages or pens. Six cages (2.0 ´ 2.0 ´ 1.4 m) of PVC-coated polyester with a mesh size of 1.5 mm were stocked with 800 PL26 each. To assess the effect of the substrate, a 10 cm layer of sand was added to three of these cages to simulate a pen enclosure. No...

In silico analysis of polymorphic microsatellites in penaeid shrimp and construction of a free-access database Genet. Mol. Biol.
Freitas,Patrícia Domingues de; Pinheiro,Allysson Pontes; Silva,Thiago Buosi; Galetti Junior,Pedro Manoel.
We performed an in silico analysis of all microsatellites so far described for penaeid shrimp and for which the polymorphic behavior has previously been analyzed. The objective of the study was to evaluate the structural characteristics of these microsatellites and identifying patterns which allow the characterization of the nature of these sequences in the penaeid genome. All data were compiled in a free-access database specially constructed for this study. Three hundred non-mononucleotide polymorphic microsatellite loci described for 12 shrimp species belonging to the family Penaeidae were analyzed and simple and compound microsatellites with di-, tri-, tetra-, penta- and hexanucleotide motifs were found. Dinucleotides and trinucleotides were the most...

Interferência de diferentes métodos de aclimatação na sobrevivência de pós-larvas de Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) - DOI: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v31i1.307 Biological Sciences
Valença, Anita Rademaker; UFPE; Mendes, George Nilson; UFPE.

Guillaume, Julien.
Shrimp and prawn aquaculture is developing fast and amounts presently to 8% of world consumption. It concerns mainly various species of penaeids and is done with different techniques where feeding plays a variable role. This role is discussed both in the case of more or less extensive farming and in the case of intensive farming. The lack of knowledge in the field of nutrition itself is emphasized as well as the importance of feed technology both for juvenile foods and larval microcapsules or microparticles.

Larvae and post-larvae of Penaeidae and Palaemonidae in coastal lagoons of the North of Rio de Janeiro (Macaé, RJ) BJB
ALBERTONI,E. F.; PALMA-SILVA,C.; ESTEVES,F. A..
The northern part of the state of Rio de Janeiro shelters many coastal lagoons, located, mostly, in the "restinga" strip that stretches from the municipality of Macaé to the municipality of Quissamã. During 1995 and 1996 samplings were made aiming to verify the diversity and density of Natantia larvae in the Imboassica, Cabiúnas and Comprida lagoons. The monthly samples were taken with a 500 µ net, in horizontal drags from a boat. In Comprida lagoon no larvae of any family of these crustaceans were found. In Cabiúnas lagoon, the autumn was the season of the year with greatest relative abundance, the larvae belonging to only one genus: Macrobrachium. In Imboassica Lagoon samples were taken in two situations related to the variation of the water level and...

Marine crustacean farming: present status and perspectives ArchiMer
Laubier, Annie; Laubier, Lucien.
For centuries, several species of prawns and crabs have been raised from wild-caught juveniles in coastal brackish-water fish ponds in various countries of south east Asia. The Indonesian "tambaks" are well known examples of such traditional practices. In western countries, since the turn of the century, advances of marine biology and fast increase of marine fisheries enabled the development of large-scale production and release of larval stages of American and European lobsters in a fruitless attempt to restock natural populations. After the Second World War, the increasing demand for crustaceans in United States and Japan was satisfied by opening new prawn fisheries all over the world. A major breakthrough was achieved with the development of hatchery...

Mineral requirement of Penaeids ArchiMer
Piedad-pascual, F.
Marine shrimps absorb minerals from their aquatic environment aside from the minerals that come from the food they eat. Thus, the dietary requirement of shrimps for certain minerals will depend on the amounts and availability of these minerals in the aquatic environment. Dietary sources for growth may be necessary due to losses during moltings.

Population parameters of the shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri (Heller, 1862) (Crustacea, Penaeidae), caught by artisanal fisheries in Anchieta, Espírito Santo State - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i2.13408 Biological Sciences
Eutrópio, Frederico Jacob; Universidade Vila Velha; Mariante, Fátima Lieberenz Falleiros; Universidade Vila Velha; Ferreira Junior, Paulo Dias; Universidade Vila Velha; Krohling, Werther; Universidade Vila Velha.
The fishery on Penaeidae shrimp is done all over the Brazilian coast, especially the seabob shrimp (Xiphopenaeus kroyeri). It is captured in large quantities in the Southeast and Southern Brazil. In order to study the population structure of X. kroyeri from Anchieta Municipality, Espírito Santo State, during the period from January to December 2008, monthly samplings with one-hour-long were conducted to verify the number of individuals, biomass, sex, total length and gonad maturity stage. The specimens had total length ranging from 2.96 to 9.96 cm, and females were larger than males. It is suggested that the population of X. kroyeri presents patterns of recruitment and reproduction similar to those of the Northeast region. The estimated size of first...

Progression de l'organisation phragmale du metamere thoracique de quelques malacostraces ArchiMer
Casanova, B; Huguet, D; Secretan, S.
A comparison of the skeleton of a successive thoracic segment in various Malacostraca shows the development and growing complexity of phragmal structure. It first appears in some Mysicacea and in Euphausiacea by means of an interarthrodial lamina issued from sternite. In Decapoda, Penaidae, Atyidae, Processidae, Palaemonidae, this lamina is diversified and some elements from pleural origin join it. The beginning of the so constituted wall considerably increases in Nephropidae and becomes ramified.

Shrimp Taura syndrome virus: genomic characterization and similarity with members of the genus Cricket paralysis-like viruses ArchiMer
Mari, Jocelyne; Poulos, Bonnie; Lightner, Donald; Bonami, Jean-robert.
The single-stranded genomic RNA of Taura syndrome virus (TSV) is 10205 nucleotides in length, excluding the 3' poly(A) tail, and contains two large open reading frames (ORFs) that are separated by an intergenic region of 207 nucleotides. The ORFs are flanked by a 377 nucleotide 5' untranslated region (UTR) and a 226 nucleotide 3' UTR followed by a poly(A) tail. The predicted amino acid sequence of ORF1 revealed sequence motifs characteristic of a helicase, a protease and an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, similar to the non-structural proteins of several plant and animal RNA viruses. In addition, a short amino acid sequence located in the N-terminal region of ORF1 presented a significant similarity with a baculovirus IAP repeat (BIR) domain of inhibitor of...

The role of astaxanthin in shrimp pigmentation ArchiMer
Latscha, T.
Carotenoids are exogenously derived isoprenoid compounds which are responsible for pigmentation in crustaceans. While implants and bacteria are able to synthesize these carotenoids de novo, shrimps like other animals entirely depend on their dietary supply. The major carotenoid found in most crustacean tissues and responsible, e.g. for the typical colour of penaeids is astaxanthin. With increasing industrialization in shrimp farming there is a growing demand for synthetic, nature-identical carotenoids, not only for pigmentation, but also for the maintenance of growth and fertility.
