The objective of the present study was to analyze diel variation in the abundance and size of the seabob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri in the Ubatuba region, state of São Paulo, during the year 2000. In each season of the year, collections were made in the day and at night on 9 transects at depths ranging from 2 to 40 m. The estimated shrimp amount was of 28,878 individuals. Although the catch rate was higher during the day (15,853 shrimp), this did not differ significantly from the catch at night (13,025). The catch rate was higher in daytime on most transects, but was higher at night at locations where fine and very fine sand predominated. The majority of juveniles were caught during the day. The mean size (CL) was 14.43 ± 4.02 mm for day and 14.82 ± 4.28... |

This study was conducted to compare the effects of shrimp and rabbitfish in mono- and polyculture stocked at high biomass on production and environmental conditions in a mesocosm system. Shrimp (14 g) and/or rabbitfish (19 g) were stocked in four treatments with different density but with the same total biomass (236 g m−2), including shrimp monoculture (SM) (17 shrimp m−2), shrimp–fish polyculture (SF) (11 shrimp and 4 rabbitfish m−2), fish–shrimp polyculture (FS) (6 shrimp and 8 rabbitfish m−2) and fish monoculture (FM) (12 rabbitfish m−2). After 10 weeks of experiment, shrimp survival and biomass were low in the treatments where shrimp were dominant (SM, SF), while rabbitfish survival and biomass were high in all the treatments. Shrimp mortality was... |

In order to improve the formulation of diets fed to reared Penaeus vannamei, the effects of soya bean and fish meals on the growth, survival, and the characteristics of the hepatopancreas and digestive enzymes of the species were studied. Four soya bean meal concentrations (0, 5, 15, 40%), four fish meal concentrations (0, 5, 15, 30%), two forms of soya bean meal and three fish meals of different geographical origin were tested. Experimental conditions were as follows: ten individuals were placed in each tank (0.5 m2 ) and two tanks were subjected to each treatment. Food was given twice a day (08-09.00 h and 19.00 h) at 10% of the initial weight each day. For biochemical analyses, nine individuals per treatment were used for the determination of the... |

The Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei (Penaeidae), represents about 95% of all Brazilian shrimp production. The Brazilian L. vannamei foundation broodstock was made up of specimens collected from different American Pacific sites, but little information was collected on the genetic structure of the broodstock. We used the fluorescence amplified fragment length polymorphism (fAFLP) method to study the genetic diversity of L. vannamei broodstock lines 03CMF1 and 03CBF1 originally produced by breeder-shrimps imported mainly from Panama and Ecuador, although wild individuals from other localities may also have been used in producing these two lines. Our results showed a total of 93 polymorphic bands ranging from 50 to 500 bp, the mean Nei's genetic... |

Technology for the culture of the pink shrimp Farfantepenaeus paulensis in low-cost cages and pen enclosures was developed together with artisanal fishermen of the Patos Lagoon estuary, southern Brazil. Although the production of postlarvae (PL) under laboratory conditions is well documented, survival and growth during the nursery phase cages and pen enclosures in the nature has not yet been analyzed. Therefore, the present study compared survival and growth of F. paulensis postlarvae reared either in cages or pens. Six cages (2.0 ´ 2.0 ´ 1.4 m) of PVC-coated polyester with a mesh size of 1.5 mm were stocked with 800 PL26 each. To assess the effect of the substrate, a 10 cm layer of sand was added to three of these cages to simulate a pen enclosure. No... |

The northern part of the state of Rio de Janeiro shelters many coastal lagoons, located, mostly, in the "restinga" strip that stretches from the municipality of Macaé to the municipality of Quissamã. During 1995 and 1996 samplings were made aiming to verify the diversity and density of Natantia larvae in the Imboassica, Cabiúnas and Comprida lagoons. The monthly samples were taken with a 500 µ net, in horizontal drags from a boat. In Comprida lagoon no larvae of any family of these crustaceans were found. In Cabiúnas lagoon, the autumn was the season of the year with greatest relative abundance, the larvae belonging to only one genus: Macrobrachium. In Imboassica Lagoon samples were taken in two situations related to the variation of the water level and... |

The fishery on Penaeidae shrimp is done all over the Brazilian coast, especially the seabob shrimp (Xiphopenaeus kroyeri). It is captured in large quantities in the Southeast and Southern Brazil. In order to study the population structure of X. kroyeri from Anchieta Municipality, Espírito Santo State, during the period from January to December 2008, monthly samplings with one-hour-long were conducted to verify the number of individuals, biomass, sex, total length and gonad maturity stage. The specimens had total length ranging from 2.96 to 9.96 cm, and females were larger than males. It is suggested that the population of X. kroyeri presents patterns of recruitment and reproduction similar to those of the Northeast region. The estimated size of first... |

The single-stranded genomic RNA of Taura syndrome virus (TSV) is 10205 nucleotides in length, excluding the 3' poly(A) tail, and contains two large open reading frames (ORFs) that are separated by an intergenic region of 207 nucleotides. The ORFs are flanked by a 377 nucleotide 5' untranslated region (UTR) and a 226 nucleotide 3' UTR followed by a poly(A) tail. The predicted amino acid sequence of ORF1 revealed sequence motifs characteristic of a helicase, a protease and an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, similar to the non-structural proteins of several plant and animal RNA viruses. In addition, a short amino acid sequence located in the N-terminal region of ORF1 presented a significant similarity with a baculovirus IAP repeat (BIR) domain of inhibitor of... |
